Car Hire Insurance

A car rental agreement normally includes cover for Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft. However you are still liable for the Excess on CDW and Theft. When a rental car is damaged or stolen, the driver is asked to pay the first portion of the repair or replacement costs. This is known as the Excess. Car Hire Insurance covers you not only for the total amount of Excess for which you are liable if the car is damaged or stolen, but also for damage to the roof and undercarriage of the car, and windows and tyres.

Most car rental companies offer their own excess insurance but many of these policies exclude damage to windows, tyres and the undercarriage, and cost between £5 and £12 per day. Therefore the cost of an annual policy for Car Hire Insurance is likely to be less than you'd pay for even 1 week of cover obtained direct from the car hire company. Usually, once covered, all you need to do is decline the car rental company’s Excess at the counter. If the car is damaged or stolen, the car rental company will charge your credit card, and you claim for reimbursement.
